Boarding at Scarborough College is so much more than having your room next to the school. It is about becoming and being part of a small family. When we talk about boarding the SC way, we talk about more than just being enrolled at a boarding school. Joining Scarborough College as a boarding pupil means become part of a boarding community and by joining Scarborough College, you become part of the town and you become a part of Yorkshire. It means waking up with sand in between your toes and Yorkshire grit coursing through your veins. Boarding the SC way is about being at home.
Boarding at Scarborough College is a blend of traditional values and modern living. Set in the quiet residential area of Filey Road just outside Scarborough town centre and at a stone’s throw from the College, our three boarding houses are historical buildings dating back to the Georgian and Victorian periods.
Scarborough College boarders are looked after by dedicated house parents and academic visiting tutors. The house parents live in the houses and are assisted by a live-in Assistant Housemaster or Housemistress. The visiting tutors are mostly academic staff who assist the houseparents and assistants on weekday evenings. As the visiting tutors are mainly academic staff, they also help out pupils during Prep time in the evenings. After Prep time, both the tutors and the house staff are on-hand for games, house competitions, sports activities and many other things that make boarding a special and unique experience.
Dedicated programmes such as the Enrichment Programme and Yorkshire Grit are inclusive and timetabled co-curricular activities that both day- and boarding pupils enjoy during the weekdays. Many of our boarders represent the school in sporting events on Saturdays as well as weekdays. Our Boarding Administrator Ms Evans ensures that there are special boarders’ activities every Sunday, which include day trips to York, cinema trips, outdoor activities and one very special activity every year.
Both Crews and Weaponness have seen extensive refurbishments in recent years, while minor refurbishment works have been ongoing in Willersley. The Scarborough College community are proud of their houses and rightly so, for they are stunning, cosy and much more like a home than a boarding house. Seeing is believing and we would love for prospective families to take the time to visit our beautiful houses.
Before you have a chance to visit in person, please help yourself get acquainted to the boarding houses that make boarding at Scarborough College so unique. Denys Crews, the junior boys’ house, is home to 20 boys; Willersley the girls’ house has 32 girls and there are almost 60 boarders in our Sixth Form house, Weaponness.
