Sixth Form

Welcome from our
Head of Upper School

The Sixth Form years are among the most exciting and rewarding of your school career. At Scarborough College, every student is known, valued and encouraged to fulfil their potential.

Through the International Baccalaureate, small classes and individual support, students develop the confidence, curiosity and independence to thrive in their chosen next steps. The education we provide is all-encompassing and carefully tailored to students’ interests, abilities and future aspirations.

Sixth Form is about more than academic results. Students embrace new experiences, pursue their interests and become part of our close-knit international community.

Join us for our Sixth Form Options evening on Wednesday 11 November 2026, 6-8pm. Let us know if you are coming by clicking here.

I look forward to welcoming you to Scarborough College.

Mrs Elizabeth Murphy, Deputy Head (IB) and Head of Upper School

About
the IB

Scarborough College has been an IB World School since 2007. In 2023, we added the BTEC Sport, which provides an opportunity for students to focus on slightly fewer IB subjects while continuing their passion for sport.

As an IB-focused Sixth Form, we offer a broad choice of subjects and a community united by a shared educational approach. Our experienced teachers are specially trained to deliver the IB curriculum, providing students with academic expertise, individual support and challenge within a nurturing environment.

IB Diploma Programme Subjects

Students studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) typically choose one subject from each of six subject groups:

  • Studies in Language
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • The Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The Arts

Students may choose an additional subject from another group instead of the Arts subject, allowing them to tailor the Diploma to their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Further information about the subjects available can be found in our Course Content brochure below.

The Core

Unique to the International Baccalaureate, The Core component of the IBDP consist of three key parts:

  • The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) challenges students to explore how knowledge is created, shared, and evaluated. It develops critical thinking, encourages them to  question assumptions, and helps them to connect ideas across subjects, cultures, and real-world contexts.
  • The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent research project on a topic chosen by the student. Each student is supported through the process by a specialist supervisor.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) encourages personal growth through meaningful experiences beyond the classroom. Students may teach younger pupils, coach sports, lead enrichment sessions or support charities and community projects.
