Rugby at Scarborough College

Rugby Development

Scarborough is a town full of excellence and passion for rugby. Therefore it is no surprise that rugby at the College is on the rise both on and off the pitch. The school also sponsors Scarborough and Driffield Rugby Clubs, creating opportunities for pupils to play for their respective clubs on a weekend and increase their exposure to the game.

Our rugby programme ensures that the sport is open to everyone and that the needs of players are met and addressed. As well as getting players involved in matches and training, we also focus on factors such as strength and conditioning and nutritional advice to enable athletes to perform at their very best.

As part of the main 15-a-side fixture list we can field up to six sides, who play in regular fixtures against some of the strongest schools in the North-East of England. These provide over 100 pupils weekly opportunities to test their skills and strategy.

In the Spring Term our teams play fixtures in both the 10-a-side and 7s formats. Both are enjoyed by all students and staff involved, but our progress in the 7’s has been astronomical. The College participates in a large number of Rugby 7s competitions from January through to March, culminating in our now annual participation at the Rosslyn Park National School 7’s. This is the biggest school 7s tournament in the world, with 1,099 teams entered into the week’s festival of rugby in London. In 2024, our first outing at the tournament, we took three sides to London to compete against the best in the country. We have increased the number of sides in 2025 to four – U18, U16, U14 & U13.

Facilities

As a College we are immensely proud of our facilities. We have our 400m Bramcote athletics track which we utilise for Strength and Conditioning. Bramcote Field is also home to the 1st XV pitch. We use these for fixtures and for training three times per week. Also we have the main school pitches and Deepdale pitches for training and younger years matches.

Altogether, Scarborough College is home to five outstanding rugby pitches, immaculately maintained by our fantastic ground staff.
