Sports Report Autumn Term 2025

This term has seen strong progress and achievement across sport at Scarborough College, from our youngest teams to senior squads competing nationally. As our fixture list grows and we regularly face schools with a strong reputation in sport, our students continue to meet each challenge with commitment and resilience. Many have represented their counties and countries, and several teams have once again reached national competitions.

Key highlights include the U18 Boys’ Indoor Hockey team finishing third nationally after a narrow semi-final loss on shuffles, and the U15 Cricket team placing fourth nationally in the T20 competition. Our U18 Rugby squad reached the National Quarter Finals, while the U15 and U14 teams remain in the last 16. Both U18 Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey teams continue to compete at the highest level in England Hockey Tier 1 .and the ISHC. This term also saw three senior Netball teams taking part in the evening league, with the Owls currently top of their division, and our first student competing internationally in track and field.

Beyond the results, the term has been defined by steady improvement, teamwork and personal growth. Each fixture, training session and tournament has helped our students develop not only as athletes but also as confident, well-rounded individuals. We also recognise the effort many pupils put into sport outside school, and we welcome news of their achievements so these can be shared with the wider community.

My thanks go to all teachers and coaches for their dedication, and to parents, carers and supporters for everything from lifts to cheering on cold touchlines. I am excited to present out newest sports reports pages, which showcase the students achievements this term.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Sport Sections

  • Athletics
  • It has been a hugely successful term for our athletics and cross-country, with a number of students representing Scarborough College both locally and internationally. Our new Year 10 student Juliette was straight into representative action at the English Schools Combined Events Championships, held in September. Taking on some of the country’s best in the Pentathlon, she finished in third place, which earned her selection for the Schools International in December and with this, becoming the first Scarborough College athlete to compete internationally in track and field since the programme began in 2023. Her impressive form continued and after a 405 point improvement on her previous indoor Pentathlon, she finished in an impressive fourth place and contributed to England’s overall team victory at the Schools International.

Away from the track, our cross-country athletes have enjoyed a number of successes this term. Oliver, Izzy and Dexter all put in brilliant performances to finish within the top-six in the district league opener. Izzy and Dexter’s positive results continued and have now earned them selection for the Scarborough area team and both will be hoping to qualify for the county squad and even the English Schools Cross Country Finals in January.

  • Boys’ Cricket
  • Following the College’s most successful summer of cricket, the students returned, looking to carry on where they left off. At the end of August, our U15 Boys travelled to Arundel Castle for the ESCA T20 Finals Day but were narrowly beaten at the semi final stage by Shrewsbury School. Having restricted their opponents to 154, contributions from Gersham and Noah were not enough to get the U15 Boys over the line and they fell just three runs short.

A number of that side put the disappointment behind them and contributed to the U14 Boys being crowned Yorkshire champions a few weeks later. They comfortably beat Queen Elizabeth Grammar School of Wakefield by 72 runs after contributions from Xavier, Archie and Will helped them post 226. The QEGS reply never got going as Sadev picked up an impressive four wickets in the second innings.

To round off a busy month, the senior development teams were in action to bring to an end an action packed season. They enjoyed tests against Queen Ethelburga’s, a two day game against the MCC and the annual Forty XL fixture. Off the field, attention now turns to our Silver and Gold Cricket Centre of Excellence, which has turned its focus to fitness testing and athletic development this half term.

  • Girls’ Cricket
  • The Girls’ Cricket at Scarborough College continues to go from strength to strength with both of our U15 and U13 Girls featuring in a regional cup finals, for the very first time, at North Marine Road. The U15s, set a target of 144 off 20 overs, were narrowly beaten by Bradford Grammar School despite showing grit and character.

The U15s were also involved in a nailbiter as they took on Penistone Grammar School. Lois top scored with 70 runs but it was not enough as Penistone chased down 113 with three balls remaining.

  • Equestrian
  • The Equestrian team have enjoyed a number of successes this term, with the highlight being a trip to the National Schools Equestrian Association Show Jumping Qualifier at Northallerton Equestrian Centre. Tilly, Annabelle and Madeleine all put in brilliant performances in the 80cm category to qualify for the finals with Tilly booking her place in an individual event. The success then continued in the 90cm category, with Felicity, Madeleine and Tilly qualifying second and Tilly getting another qualification for the Plate Finals. The College were also delighted to welcome Beatrice, who jumped clear in her first competition.

  • Hockey
  • Both on and off the field, it has been a hugely positive and busy term for hockey across the college. Whether it be the fact that we have constantly managed to field first, second and third/U16 teams or that a large number of our pupils have had the chance to test themselves against more experienced opposition.

With the U15, U14, U13 and U12 sides all excelling, the senior outdoor squads have also put in a number of strong performances as they look to compete in Tier 1. The second and third XIs have also produced notable performances this term over St Peter’s York, Hymers and Dame Allan’s. The action continues after Christmas, with a particular focus on the First XI Girls, who are set to play Manchester High School in the last 16 of the ISHC Cup.

  • Indoor Hockey
  • Our senior teams have enjoyed one of their most successful indoor hockey campaigns to date with both the U18 Boys and Girls looking to qualify for the National Finals. The Boys, who qualified earlier this term, put in a number of strong performances to finish third overall after narrowly losing to eventual winner Repton on penalty shuffles. The Girls also suffered penalty shuffles heartbreak at the qualifying stage, despite winning every round in the round-robin phase.

  • Netball
  • It has been a fantastic term for Netball at Scarborough College with all teams, from the U14s through to the Owls, putting in brilliant performances. A major highlight is the success of the U16 squad, who have recently reached the next round of the competition.

Outside of school hours, there have been over 30 Girls participating in three evening league teams, led by captains Tilly, Evie and Rachel. The Owls recently won the Division Two tournament and are currently sat top of the Division Two table at the halfway point of the season. The Gibbons and Kites continue to excel and are battling it out for the top spots in their respective divisions.

  • Rugby
  • Rugby has once again taken a huge step forward this term following the introduction of Ben Foden as Director of Rugby. Two notable highlights include the tours to Edinburgh as the U13s took on Ardvreck School and RGS Newcastle and the First XV attended the annual Merchiston Castle Festival for the second year running, competing against the likes of Oakham, St Peter’s York and Barnard Castle.

A number of our teams have been on impressive National cup runs this term with the U14s reaching the last 16, only to be narrowly beaten by Sedbergh school and the First XV advancing to the quarter-finals of the National Plate before they were edged out by a powerful Ellesmere College side. The only side remaining in a National competition are the U15s, who have progressed through to the last 16 and will face QEGS Penrith after the Christmas break.

Closer to home, the weekly fixtures continue to yield outstanding results across the board. The U12s are showing their potential as an exciting year group for the future and the U13s have won nine out of their ten fixtures this term with notable wins over Pocklington and Hymers.

Once again at the senior level, the rugby programme has accelerated and seen unprecedented success this term. The 1st XV have secured significant victories including a double against Pocklington, a great away win over Hill House and a first ever win over Ampleforth. Additionally, the Second XV have built on the start they had last year and competed in a full fixture card with significant victories over  Pocklington, St Peter’s and Hill House.

  • Golf and Squash
  • The golf team have had a busy term as they competed in back-to-back competitions. They first welcomed Queen Ethelburga’s to South Cliff Golf Club in the ISGA. Following three superb rounds of high quality golf, it was QE who progressed through to the next round after they came through a play off hole. Later in the term, the second team travelled to Oulton Hall for their ISGA competition, where they took part in both a team and individual competition. Graci was the standout player as they performed superbly to win the overall Net Competition.

This term has also seen the squash team return to competitive action as they competed in the England Squash National Schools Championships. Despite being beaten by strong sides from St Aidan’s and King Ecgbert’s, they will now turn their attention to the plate competition, which will be played after Christmas, against Lincoln Minster and Manchester Grammar.

  • Prep School Sport
  • It has been a busy and exciting term for all of our Prep School pupils as they returned to the rugby and hockey pitches after the summer break. It has also been particularly exciting as we welcomed our new Year 3 pupils to Junior Games, where they developed their skills and represented Scarborough College in their first ever fixtures.

    Hockey:

The Girls’ Hockey season has been one to remember for a number of different reasons, with a full calendar of fixtures, festivals and tournaments taking place this term. The U11s and U10s have enjoyed brilliant seasons and the U11 Girls have grown tremendously as a squad. Their progress was highlighted most notably at the Yorkshire County Round, where they produced some of their best hockey of the term to reach the semi-finals.

The U10 Girls have also shown impressive consistency and maturity for their age group as they travelled to Barnard Castle in September, returning with four wins, a draw and a loss. They performed exceptionally well at the NEJS U10 Championships resulting in the Girls being crowned champions.

Further down the school, our U8 and U9 teams have enjoyed a particularly exciting term as they take their early steps into competitive hockey. Many pupils represented the school for the very first time, showing wonderful enthusiasm, energy and sportsmanship.

    Rugby:

The Boys’ rugby teams have enjoyed an equally strong and rewarding season. The U11s have picked up excellent victories over Tranby, Read, Terrington and Pocklington. A standout moment of the term was winning all their matches in the Plate competition at the HMC Festival. The U10 boys have once again proven themselves a formidable team, reaching the semi-finals of the Clegg Cup at Barnard Castle before following this up with a strong performance at the NEJS Festival in Bradford.

Our U9s have enjoyed their first introduction to contact rugby, celebrating wins over Hymers and St Peter’s York as well as tough tests against Pocklington and Cundall Manor. A particular highlight of the term has to be the U8s taking part in their very first TAG rugby festival.

Hattie continues to compete in England Squash and tournaments on the European Squash Federation Circuit. Her recent highlights have included finishing seventh in the European Squash Federation U17 Girls’ Welsh Junior Open and finishing twelfth in the England Squash U17 Girls’ British Junior Championships.
