Sports Report Spring Term 2026

Following the success of our students travelling to South Africa in the Autumn Term , the Spring Term has seen our exchange programme continue to flourish with a number of our students travelling to New Zealand whilst we welcomed students from their host school St Peter’s, New Zealand. This programme has given our students incredible opportunities to experience sport in different environments, gain an understanding and appreciation of new cultures, whilst also making life long friendships.

It has also been a term where we have seen our students represent their country including our first ever full international Eboni Brathwaite, who represented the West Indies against Sri Lanka. Pip Lucas has once again been selected to represent England U16 Hockey and has the honour of captaining her country, whilst Seth Bodill has been selected for England Lambs, playing in their three opening games.

It has been a fast paced term with an incredible number of fixtures, tournaments and cups. I would like to extend congratulations to all our students for their achievements whilst offering my sincere thanks to my coaches and our fabulous parent community for their incredible support. I am sure you will enjoy the incredible highlights below.

  • Athletics
  • As spring approaches, we can reflect on the most successful term in Scarborough College’s athletics history. Putting the dark and wet winder behind them, our athletes got their first taste of life indoors competing at the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield. Oscar (Bronze) and Hugo (Silver) both picked up medals in the pole vault, navigating their new age groups comfortably. Summer (Bronze) and Ben (Silver) both took medals in the Triple Jumper with the latter returning on the next day to take an impressive silver in the Long Jump.

Ben was then back in action, competing in the Triple Jump, as he took on some of the finest U20 jumpers in the world and finished in an impressive seventh place. Hugo then finished the indoor season in style as he cleared 3.80m at the Manchester Open meet to push himself into the top four in the UK for U16’s.

Away from the track and field, a number of our students have been representing Scarborough District at the Cross Country County Championships with Ben and Izzy both putting together strong runs on a difficult course.

Summer sees a range of fixtures for the college where we look forward to hosting the North East Prep Schools Championship for the first time. Other highlights include our first ever attendance of the English Schools Cup and the season opening Scarborough District trials which are being hosted at Bramcote.

  • Equestrian
  • It has been a very positive term for our Equestrian team, who have represented the College on a number of different occasions this year. The team picked up an impressive first place at the 80cm Arena Eventing in Epworth at the beginning of the year, a result that  qualifies the team for the NSEA National Championships at Hickstead this coming May.

The winning streak continued at the Northallerton Arena Eventing at the end of February, as Tilly, Annabelle and Madeleine once again proved to be a formidable force, securing another team first place in the 80cm class. Special mention goes to Tilly, who enjoyed an exceptional day in the individual standings, claiming first place in both the 80cm and 90cm classes, securing more qualifications for the National Championships.

Most recently, the team returned to Epworth for a day of show jumping. In the 80cm class, Beatrice, Madeleine, Tilly and Annabelle fought hard to earn a team second place. With all four, as well as Harry, joining forces to secure another second place in the 90cm class.

The team will now begin their preparation for the NSEA National Championships at Hickstead in May.

  • Boys’ Hockey
  • The Boys’ have enjoyed a fantastic season across all age groups, from U12s through to Seniors, it has been a term and season to remember.

The U13As have become a formidable team in the local area, only losing a couple of games and setting the standard for the rest of the teams. They enjoyed a fantastic run in the U13 ISHC reaching the last 16 of the cup competition whereas the U13B team also registered a number of positive results, most notably a 3-1 win over Hymers, and will now look forward to transitioning into an 11-a-side team. The success continued with the U15s, who became known for their exciting, attacking brand of hockey that they showcased throughout the term.

One side that took the transition into their stride was the U14s, who started the season with a comprehensive win over Bradford Grammar before going on to keep six clean sheets across the course of the season, which is a huge achievement and testament to how much the boys value defence.

Senior hockey saw record participation, with a new third team formed and filled with a number of players who had never played the sport before. They thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to come up against other schools and picked up wins against St Peter’s and Pocklington. The second team have become a serious force to be reckoned with and have put in strong performances against first teams.

  • Girls’ Hockey
  • The post Christmas period brought a memorable end to the Girls’ Hockey season, with the 1st XI showing their strong team spirit throughout a mix of highs and lows. A narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester High School in the ISHC Cup Quarter Final was a disappointment for the team despite putting in a dominant performance.

They responded impressively in Tier 1, picking up excellent wins over Sedbergh and GSAL, earning them a third place finish in the Tier 1 North group and qualification for the Tier 1 Plate. But it was not meant to be as they were beaten on the road by eventual winners Surbiton High.

The season concluded on a high at the inaugural RGS Spring 7s in Newcastle, where both College teams reached an all Scarborough final and the leavers’ team celebrating taking the win. Overall, the post-Christmas period captured so much of what this Girls’ Hockey programme is about: ambition, resilience, togetherness and pride in representing Scarborough College. The 1st XI, in particular, can look back on a season of strong performances, significant progress and a series of moments that reflected great credit on themselves and the wider hockey programme.

  • Netball
  • Netball continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Mrs Porter and Miss Stewart, with 136 matches played by 18 teams. One of the real talking points of this term has been the success of the Evening League teams, with three squads made up of girls from Years 10 to 13.  Across the three teams, the Owls have really set the standard, scoring 435 goals and conceding just 147 in an undefeated season that saw them secure the Division 2 title in the Scarborough Netball League. It marks the first time that the title has been won since 2004.

In school competition, the 1st team have enjoyed a number of successes on the court, winning 6 out of 7 matches, while the 2nd VII achieved a perfect record, winning 100% of their fixtures. The juniors have showcased their talent this term, and their performances this season have been equally impressive. Achievements include the Girls’ U13 and U14A being crowned District winners, the U12 and U14B finishing runners up and the U11 also finishing runners up in the HMC Shield.

  • Rugby
  • This term has seen a positive and competitive period of a number of our rugby squads, with encouraging progress made across both the 15-a-side and 7-a-side formats.

The team competed in three challenging U17 development fixtures against strong opposition in Sedbergh, Durham and Queen Ethelburga’s to make a positive start to the new term. Focus soon shifted to the 7-a-side season, where all of our squads embraced the faster pace and increased demands of the format. The teams competed across the North East, putting in pleasing performances at tournaments hosted by Ampleforth, Woodhouse Grove, St Peter’s and Barnard Castle, highlighting the potential within the squad.

The final installment of the season saw a number of teams head down to the prestigious Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Tournament. The Boys’ U18s made it through to the second day of the tournament, for the first time in the College’s history, after they beat Wellington County Grammar School, Loughborough Schools Foundation and Mount Kelly to finish top of the group. In phase two, they finished third in their group, picking up an impressive win over Shiplake College in the final game of the group.

The U14s faced a challenging group and competed with determination throughout. A strong opening against Oundle set the tone, and despite narrow losses, the team showed resilience and physicality, scoring in each of their matches.

A combined U15/16 team also performed well, opening with an emphatic win over King’s Canterbury. They continued to show attacking intent throughout the day, though tight margins in key moments proved decisive in later matches against strong opposition.

The standout performance of the week came from the U13s, who delivered a superb unbeaten run in the group stages. Playing with confidence and flair, they scored over 70 points across their opening games before securing an impressive 15–10 win over Bishopsgate in a high-quality contest.

  • Squash
  • The mixed Squash team have had a really positive half term with the team qualifying for the National Squash Plate Finals Day. Held at Edgbaston County Club, the team comprehensively beat Wellington College in the opening round of matches. They then suffered defeat at the hands of John Hampden Grammar School before playing Wilson’s School in the final game to leave the team finishing in fourth place.

  • Prep School Sport
  • It has been a fantastic Spring Term for sport in the Prep School, with pupils demonstrating not only impressive results but also their commitment to building teamwork and resilience.

    Football

In Football, the Boys’ U11 performed superbly at the NEJS tournament, finishing as Bowl runners-up after a series of strong and competitive performances.

    Netball:

Netball is another sport that has gone from strength to strength this term with the U11 Girls’ achieving an excellent result in the NEJS Shield competition, securing a well deserved second place. The U10 team have also enjoyed a highly successful season, with standout victories against Tranby and Pocklington highlighting their continued development on the court. The U9 team have taken huge steps in their development with a string of positive performances at the Pocklington festival.

    Rugby Sevens:

In Rugby Sevens, the Boys’ have grown as the term has progressed, earning notable wins over Aysgarth and Hill House in recent weeks.

    Hockey:

Hockey also saw strong success as the U9 Boys’ picked up brilliant wins over Terrington and then finished their season with a commendable performance at a festival event.
