Sport and Scarborough College are synonymous. Sports and games from an integral part of school life and as early as Year 3, pupils are guided by experienced and professional coaches on a daily basis. From a platform of a healthy lifestyle and a passion for playing sport, pupils can develop to start representing their Academic House or Scarborough College in competitive fixtures. The journey does not end there and there are plenty of Scardeburgians, past and present, representing their countries at international level.
Pupils in Reception and Years 1 and 2 enjoy weekly swimming lessons during which we focus on water confidence, enjoyment and safety. The pupils can choose sports option during the Holiday Club sessions. From Year 3 onwards, all full school days include Games led by experienced coaches in rugby, football, hockey, netball and cricket. Pupils are encouraged to represent their Academic Houses or the school. Individual sports are encouraged and include athletics, swimming and tennis.
The Prep School benefits from the facilities at the Bramcote Sports Complex as well as all the sports facilities on the Filey Road campus. Swimming lessons are held at a swimming pool near the College and we use Deepdale playing fields daily for games and PE.
The main sports for the girls are hockey, netball and tennis. Boys play rugby, hockey and cricket. Hockey, in particular, is very strong at Scarborough College and we are one of the top hockey schools in the North of England. Using the links with Yorkshire County Cricket and the Scarborough Cricket Club, our Cricket Centre of Excellence features opportunities to train and play with the biggest talents in the country.
We play regular sporting fixtures throughout the year, where we take on local rivals. In addition, we organise a great deal of overseas tours that include competitive fixtures against international opposition, training clinics as well as sightseeing. For more information on competitions and the schedule of fixtures, please visit the Senior School Sport calendar.
We encourage pupils to get involved in and play sports other than the main school sports. Our Yorkshire Grit programme features a wealth of sporting activities both famous and less well-known. The surfing programme, in particular, is a huge hit among the pupils and we team up with Surf England to provide Level 1 Surfing Assessments to those keen to take their skills to the next level.
With three major courses within close proximity, golf is another favourite at Scarborough College. South Cliff golf club is a mere five-minutes’ walk and provides stunning views across the South Bay and North Yorkshire countryside. For both golf and surfing, we are in the process of setting up Centres of Excellence. For more information, please contact us.
