Choosing a school is one of the most important, and often difficult, decisions a parent can make for their child.

Top level results can be misleading. A school full of already high-achieving pupils may post strong grades, but that rarely tells the whole story, and certainly doesn’t tell your story. You need to know more. Is the school selective or non-selective? Is this a pattern of results or a singular year? And what is the value-added score per child?

With a genuinely personalised approach to both teaching and pastoral care, Scarborough College ensures every student is known both academically and personally. Grades are important. There is no getting away from the fact that passing exams, whether they are GCSEs or the IB Diploma, will influence the next step on your child’s journey. If you choose a school where academic excellence is pursued exclusively, you need to think about whether this will suit your child. It is clear that this type of environment works very well for some children, but not for others.
Scarborough College was recognised in its latest inspection for combining academic ambition with a strong culture of pastoral care. Students are supported not just to achieve, but to feel confident and secure in doing so. Our results speak for themselves – on average +3 points value-added for our IB students. We also have initiatives such as the College’s award winning Yorkshire Grit and Pebbles programmes, alongside our Surf Academy. These programmes encourage every student to embrace outdoor learning. Again, this is not an environment which will suit every child, but it offers an alternative.
Exams matter, but so do skills such as critical thinking, adaptability and communication. Without these skills, pupils are great at memorising facts, but have no ability to apply theory to the real world.
As an IB World School, our Sixth Form, in particular, has a curriculum designed specifically to develop these attributes. The IB Diploma Programme encourages independent thinking, intellectual curiosity, and global awareness. In the Senior School, our emphasis on taking learning beyond the classroom with field trips and guest speakers brings facts to life in a practical and engaging way.
Our teaching is deliberately adaptive. Students are challenged when ready, supported when needed, and consistently guided forward. Small class sizes make this possible, ensuring every child receives both stretch and structure, without being overlooked or left behind.
Sport, drama, outdoor education, leadership… these should not be extras in the learning week. A break from academic rigour is good for the soul and the brain, giving both time to reset and refresh. It boosts mental and physical well-being, helps students engage more deeply with the curriculum and builds life skills.
We know that not every classroom has to have four walls. From performance on stage to competitive sport and outdoor learning experiences like our Yorkshire Grit programme, Scarborough College ensures students build resilience, confidence, and character alongside academic success. The fact that our students take on the 42 mile Lyke Wake Walk in Year 12 is the perfect testament to this commitment and approach.
Scarborough College is an outdoors and active school. From sports and PE to the Surf Academy and Duke of Edinburgh, our students have the opportunity to be outside every single day.
This is so subjective! Our students consistently achieve results that open doors to leading universities across the globe. In 2026 alone, we have several students going on to study medicine and veterinary science, most at Russell Group universities.
We also help our students look at more non-traditional routes, including degree apprenticeship programmes and international work placements. Some of our graduates even go on to play sport professionally. Whatever they decide is the next step, our teachers and careers advisors are there to help them every step of the way.
This is most likely the most important question and often the deciding factor – will my child find their place at this school. All the academic success in the world will not mean a thing if your child does not feel that they belong.
