Meet our Head of Boarding

With seven years at Scarborough College, Miss Kate Evans brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of our school community to her new role as Head of Boarding, which she took up in September 2026.

Working as a Prep School sports teacher and also being a boarding parent herself, Kate brings a unique perspective to the role. She understands the importance of creating an environment where young people feel safe, supported and encouraged to grow, both in confidence and independence.

We caught up with Kate to find out more about her approach to boarding, what makes the experience at Scarborough College distinctive and what families can expect when they join our boarding community.

1. What does your role as Head of Boarding involve, and what is most important to you?

Choosing to send your child to boarding school, particularly overseas, is one of the biggest decisions a family can make. It is a decision built on trust, and I see it as my responsibility to ensure that we deliver on the promises we make to our families.

The personal development, safeguarding and welfare of every boarder must be at the forefront of everything we do. We want parents to feel confident that their children are in safe hands, and we want every pupil to feel that they belong, are cared for and have the opportunity to thrive.

2. What makes boarding at Scarborough College different?

I would describe Scarborough College as a progressive boarding school. Our four boarding houses each offer bespoke, age-appropriate care, recognising that the needs of a younger pupil are very different from those of a student approaching university.

We have a junior boys’ house, a co-educational intermediate house, an all-girls’ house and a co-educational Sixth Form house. This structure allows us to tailor the boarding experience to each stage of a young person’s development.

Our houses are also located off-site, giving pupils the experience of walking to and from school each day. It is a small but important part of developing independence and creating a sense of life beyond the classroom.

3. How do you ensure boarders feel at home while making the most of their time at Scarborough College?

We are fortunate to have a very experienced and enthusiastic boarding team who are committed to creating a genuine home-from-home environment across all four houses.

Of course, academic progress is important, but boarding is about so much more than where a pupil sleeps. We want our boarders to thrive through high academic expectations, excellent sporting opportunities, exciting trips and a varied programme of activities.

These experiences help young people build friendships, discover new interests and develop the independence and confidence they will need for the next stages of their lives. Having experienced life as a boarding parent myself, I understand how important it is for families to know that their children are happy, well cared for and making the most of every opportunity.

4. What would you say to a family considering boarding at Scarborough College?

I would encourage them to come and see the school and our boarding houses for themselves. Choosing a boarding school is a significant decision, and families need to feel confident that it is the right environment for their child.

At Scarborough College, we pride ourselves on being a home away from home. My team and I look forward to welcoming new families into our community and helping their children settle in, develop and make the most of everything boarding has to offer.
