Welcome from the Head of the Prep School

Here at Scarborough College Prep School, your child is celebrated, supported, and welcomed into a caring family community. With small class sizes, every pupil is known as an individual and encouraged to grow in confidence while discovering their unique strengths. Our dedicated teachers bring learning to life, and specialist subject teaching in French, drama, music and other areas ensures children experience a rich, inspiring curriculum. Sport is enjoyed every day from Year 3, and our Yorkshire Pebbles programme takes learning outdoors to explore, play and connect with nature. Age-appropriate digital learning, using interactive whiteboards, tablets and Chromebooks, builds independence and creativity from day one. Here, your child is nurtured to thrive.

About the
Prep School

Children start their Prep School journey in Reception but other entry points are possible, and where available, we can consider students at any time of the academic year. Children in the Infants’ school (Reception to Year 2) have one form teacher who is assisted with a number of specialist teachers for many subjects.

From Year 3 onwards (Junior School), children can enjoy specialist subject teachers across all subjects. They also enjoy access to subject specialist classrooms for science lessons, visual and performing arts. All children are provided daily games and sports lessons from the coaching team in the Senior School. The Prep school has a huge advantage of being able to use the superb facilities of the Senior school.

Early Years (Reception to Year 2)

Inside the
classroom

Small classes allow each child to have the teacher time that is so critical in Key Stage 1. Our accelerated reading programme encourages all children to read and celebrates their success. Specialist French, Music and Sports teachers ensure that the children are challenged in every part of the curriculum.

Beyond
the Door

The proximity of the beach and the North Yorkshire moors, as well as Dalby forest, make our forest and beach schools a fantastic place to learn. Our Yorkshire Pebbles programme allows the children to experience surfing, skateboarding and rock climbing. Bring your bike to school days provide another opportunity to be outside and to have fun. 

Years 3-6

Inside the
classroom

Teachers are guided, not constrained, by the National curriculum, visiting topics unseen in other schools. Subjects are taught by specialist teachers and many of them in designated labs and classrooms. We encourage public speaking and foster confidence. With the resources to allow each child to flourish, children enjoy their time in the Prep School. 

Beyond
the Door

Sports are an important part of the lives for children in Years 3-6. There is a chance to play competitive matches against local schools. Rather than SATS in Year 6, children have a chance to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks and, for many a highlight, the end-of-year drama production.
