Every student here undertakes the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), a qualification that is globally respected, academically rigorous and designed to build independence. You will benefit from small class sizes, expert teaching and individualised support, all helping you to prepare with confidence for university and life beyond. About
the IB Diploma Programme

Scarborough College has been an IB World School since 2007. In 2023, we added the BTEC Sport, which provides an opportunity for students to focus on slightly fewer IB subjects while continuing their passion for sport.

We are an IB only Sixth Form. This means that students can enjoy a homogenous Sixth Form and a larger variety of subjects than many other IB Schools in the UK. Above all, it means that our teachers are specialised and trained to deliver only the IB curriculum. In short, you are provided with academic expertise in a nurturing environment.

IB Diploma Programme Subjects

Students typically study one option from each of the six IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) subject groups:

  • Studies in Language
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • The Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • The Arts

Scarborough College is an IB only Sixth Form and therefore offers a wide range of subjects across the six areas.

You can find out more about the subjects in the IB Subject guide (download below).

The Core

Unique to the International Baccalaureate, The Core component of the IBDP consist of three key parts:

  • The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) challenges students to explore how knowledge is created, shared, and evaluated. It develops critical thinking, encourages questioning assumptions, and helps students connect ideas across different subjects, cultures, and real-world contexts.
  • Independent research, which is used to form the Extended Essay (EE). Students may develop their essay topic from any of their six subject areas, under the supervision of a key member of staff.
  • The development of personal growth in the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). As part of their CAS projects, students have chosen to volunteer to teach younger members of the school, coach sports, hold EP sessions in Italian or donate their time to charities.
