Scarborough College became an IB World School in 2007 and since then several hundred of our Sixth Form students have graduated with the world renowned IB Diploma and progressed on to prestigious universities both at home and abroad.
The IB Diploma Programme is based on the philosophy that students should apply critical thinking skills to their experiences and learn to assess the world around them. Through this process students’ develop their academic, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing and finish their studies at the College as internationally minded individuals ready to participate in our global society through the comprehensive study of six subjects and three core components over two years.
The IB Diploma provides our Sixth Form students with a stimulating and broad post-16 curriculum that allows them to develop into self-motivated, intellectually curious critical thinkers. With more than twenty five different subjects offered in our Diploma Programme there is a rich variety of courses for students to explore whilst benefiting from teaching that encourages them to become inquisitive, knowledgeable and reflective learners.
The decision of what to do after GCSEs is an important milestone in the academic career of all students at this crucial stage in their education. I hope the information on this website provides an insight into the life of our Sixth Form and I look forward to welcoming prospective Sixth Formers to Scarborough College.
Miss Katie Cooke, IB Diploma Coordinator
Our students in Years 12 and 13 study for the world renowned and gold standard IB diploma. The IB qualification is a stimulating and forward-looking course that is highly regarded by universities all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.
After their Sixth Form, the vast majority of our students leave for their first choice university, many of which are outside the UK. Information about results, ranking and university destinations can be found on our page dedicated to results and university destinations.
Entry requirements for students into the Sixth Form are 5 GCSE passes at grades 9 to 4 or the equivalent for international students. The IB Diploma Programme inspires students to study a wide range of subjects, such as a modern foreign language, theatre, sports exercise and health science or global politics; while also incorporating the more traditional subjects. Core aspects of the IB DP include the unique Theory of Knowledge course and the Extended Essay, both of which provide invaluable preparation for the self-discipline demanded by both domestic and international universities and the workplace. The CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is at the heart of the Diploma Programme and encourages students to undertake personal challenges and purposeful activities of their choosing.
When deciding on their future careers, Sixth Form students are guided by the Careers Advisor, Mrs Lowe, with further support and guidance from the Head of Sixth Form, Miss Heather Ramsay, Ms Katie Cooke and their tutors. This ensures that the process of applying for further study, which can be daunting, is smooth and students feel supported throughout. In addition, guest speakers and visitors come to the school frequently to give insights and share personal experiences of the wide variety of Higher Education options available to the students.
Being a Sixth-Former at Scarborough College means having privileges as well as responsibilities. Our Sixth Form students enjoy the comforts of their own areas where they can study and relax. Both the Filey Road café as well as the Sixth Form Study Centre are for the exclusive use of Sixth Form students. Instead of a school uniform, Sixth Formers wear smart business attire.
We guide our students to become more independent, work diligently and understand the importance of a mature, reflective attitude to learning that requires them to meet deadlines and develop their organisational skills. By offering the depth and breadth of the IB Diploma and by allowing our Sixth Form students to become young academics, we believe they will emerge as confident and capable young adults who are ready for the next phase of their education.
