Sports Report Summer Term 2026

As we bring another academic year to a close, we can reflect with great pride on what has been a truly outstanding year for sports at Scarborough College. Across more than 700 fixtures and over 100 teams, our pupils have represented the College with distinction, demonstrating exceptional commitment, resilience and sportsmanship.

The breadth and quality of our sporting programme continues to grow, with an increasing number of students earning county, national and international honours. Girls’ sports continue to thrive, highlighted by a historic milestone as Dani Meikle became the first female pupil to score a century for the College. Across a range of sports, our teams have consistently competed at the highest level, reaching national semi-finals and finals and establishing themselves amongst the top performing schools in the country. We have also expanded opportunities for participation, with more senior teams competing than ever before; notably, netball entered three teams into the evening league, with the Owls going on to be crowned champions.

Sport Sections

  • Athletics
  • It has been another impressive term for athletics at Scarborough College, with a number of students achieving success at regional and national levels. Their accomplishments continue to highlight the strength and depth within our growing athletics programme.

At the highest level, four students were selected to represent North Yorkshire at the prestigious English Schools’ Athletics Association (ESAA) National Championships in Birmingham. Jacob, Ben, Juliette and Hugo all earned their places among the country’s top young athletes. Juliette produced an outstanding display to win silver in the pole vault, the highest-level medal ever won by a Scarborough College student at these championships. Ben also excelled in the triple jump, producing a huge final-round leap to secure the bronze medal and claim his first ESAA medal.

Prior to the National Championships, ten students were selected to represent North Yorkshire at the North East Schools Inter-Counties Championships in Hexham. The team delivered a series of impressive results, including Bertie, Theo and Juliette all securing first places in their respective events.

Further success followed at the North Yorkshire Schools Championships in York, where students won an outstanding 28 county medals, doubling last year’s tally. One of the most notable achievements came, once again, from Juliette, who cleared 3.40m in the pole vault. This performance places her second in the UK rankings for the Under-17 age group.

The College’s annual Sports Day was another highlight of the term, with students enjoying an afternoon of friendly competition in the June sunshine. Among the standout performers, Lewis was crowned Junior Victor Ludorum, while Rebecca was named Junior Victrix Ludorum. In the Intermediate category, Hugo claimed the Victor Ludorum title, with Lara awarded Victrix Ludorum honours. Senior honours went to Ben as Victor Ludorum and Summer as Victrix Ludorum.

  • Equestrian
  • What an incredible summer term it has been for the Scarborough College Equestrian Team, with a number of standout individual and team performances. Despite weather conditions ranging from scorching heat to relentless rain, our students have continued to go from strength to strength on some of the sport’s biggest stages.

The Equestrian Team’s term kicked off at the beginning of May in Northallerton, with Lils, Rebecca and Elizabeth making their debut appearances for the school team. Lils had an outstanding day, placing first in the 40cm class and second in both the 50cm and 60cm classes. Elizabeth also secured a fantastic second place in the 70cm class, while Rebecca rode a brilliant clear round in the 80cm class to finish 14th.

In the 90cm class, Annabelle claimed fifth place individually, helping the team, alongside Madeleine and Tilly, secure a superb fourth-place finish overall. That success carried over into the next event in mid-May at Belsay, where Lara stormed to victory in the 70cm class, while Madeleine achieved a double success, placing eighth in the 80cm class and fifth in the 90cm class.

To wrap up what has been a phenomenal season, Tilly, Madeleine and Annabelle made the long journey down to Hickstead at the end of May. Competing in the highly competitive 80cm Eventers Challenge against riders from all over the country, Tilly and Madeleine rode fantastic clear rounds, while Annabelle also put in an impressive performance.

Out of a field of 170 individual riders, Tilly achieved a brilliant fourth place finish, propelling the team to an excellent 14th place out of 37 competing schools.

  • Boys’ Cricket
  • It has been another exceptional summer for cricket, with pupils across all age groups enjoying remarkable success at local, regional and national level.

Our U12 side has enjoyed an outstanding County Cup run over the past couple of weeks, recording impressive victories against Silcoates, Pocklington, and Pindar School. Another of our teams that have been in impressive form is the U13 team, who have continued their dominance, losing just one match in the past two years. The list of victories this season includes wins over St Peter’s, York House, Ampleforth, Silcoates and Newcastle School for Boys. Their season came to a memorable end as they were crowned Merseyside Cup champions, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition. Whilst the U14s enjoyed a run to the County Cup semi final, it was the U15s who took the spotlight as they reached the Northern semi final of the National T20 Cup, the National quarter final of the ESCA One Day Competition and made it to the final of the APEX tournament, as well as recording a notable victory over Durham CCC.

At senior level, the U17s reached the National Cup Semi-Finals, placing them among the top four school teams in the country. Their journey included victories over Woodhouse Grove, Rossall, Bolton, Park View, and Myerscough. The 2nd XI also enjoyed a highly successful campaign, while the 1st XI reached the National T20 Semi-Finals, again finishing among the top four teams nationally after defeating Ampleforth, St Peter’s York, Woodhouse Grove, Park View, and Myerscough. The 1st XI also recorded prestigious victories against Derbyshire, Durham County Cricket Club, and the MCC.

A special mention must go to Archie for what was undoubtedly one of the standout performances of the summer. In the U18 National T20 Finals, Archie produced a remarkable innings of 104 from just 59 balls.

  • Girls’ Cricket
  • Girls’ Cricket has continued to flourish this summer with some brilliant progress made across all age groups and a few standout performances. For many of our U12s, this summer was the first time they had experienced hardball cricket and they took the challenge in their stride as they picked up impressive wins over Cundall Manor and Queen Mary’s.

The two standout teams within the Girls’ Cricket programme have to be the U13 and U15 teams who have enjoyed a brilliant season. The U13s have reached the final of the Patsy Ackroyd T20, following wins over Aysgarth and Ripon Grammar, they will play the final in September. The U15s have reached the Mollie Staines T20 Final and the quarter finals of the 100 ball cup, while also enjoying a memorable trip to the APEX tournament, where they got the opportunity to learn from international coaches.

The 1st XI reached the Quarter-Finals of the 100 Ball Cup after an impressive sequence of victories against Barnard Castle, Park View Academy and Sedbergh School. It has also been a term of history-making as Dani became the school’s first female centurion during the 1st XI’s pre-season tour. This incredible achievement was followed by Lois who scored 197 and 101 in consecutive days.

  • Tennis
  • The summer term has been another successful one for tennis, with pupils showing enthusiasm, commitment and a real willingness to improve, making tennis one of the highlights of the term.

There have been a number of notable achievements across all age groups. Both the Senior Boys’ and Girls’ teams have secured impressive victories at St Peter’s York, while the U15 Boys performed exceptionally well to win the Plate competition at Pocklington. It has also been really encouraging to see such a strong participation in House Tennis, with around 50 pupils representing their Houses.

In the House competitions, the Year 7 and 8 final saw Horny (Arturo and Alex) overcome Crews (Henry and Oliver) in a closely contested match, winning a tense tie break. The Year 9 and 10 competition took the standard to another level with Crews claiming the title courtesy of strong performances from Naroa and Ines, alongside Griff and Oliver. In the Senior competition, Armstrong (Ben and Charlie) defeated Cooper (Joe and Tom) to be crowned House champions.

Individual awards were given to Mishka and Ed as U15 Most Improved Players, while Chiara and Isaiah were named U15 Players of the season. Jemima and Ben were deserved recipients of the Senior Players of the Season awards, reflecting their strong performances and their continued contributions throughout the term.

Whilst the results have been incredibly pleasing, the positive attitude and sportsmanship displayed by the pupils across all year groups has been a highlight and has allowed the tennis programme to develop and grow throughout the school.
