The Scarborough College MFL Department is a team of five subject specialists: Carine Marshall, Head of MFL; Marta Robledo; Heather Adams; Ralf Meijer and Mandy Gething. Our fundamental aim is to inspire pupils to share our love of languages whilst helping them to develop the communicative skills and cultural awareness of the different countries in which those languages are spoken.
In the Prep School, Mrs Lucy Barnes is giving the pupils lots of opportunities to develop their French language by using numerous games, songs, assemblies and by giving the pupils the opportunity to understand the basic communicative speech.
Throughout Year 7 and Year 9, students study French and Spanish. Listening and reading skills are the main priority, following the innovative method of Dr Gianfranco Conti. Through modelling, students are constantly involved in speaking, listening and reading activities while developing an understanding of basic grammar rules.
In Years 10 and 11, pupils study for AQA GCSE qualification in at least one Language (French or Spanish). The foundations for GCSE success are laid from the very beginning of Year 7, as we gradually develop the skills and knowledge required to tackle the challenges of those rigorous 9-1 exams.
At Sixth Form, we offer two IB diploma subjects: Language A and Language B at 3 different levels: Abinitio, Standard Level and Higher Level. The languages on offer are French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. All levels require students to immerse themselves in the linguistic, cultural, literature and grammatical aspect of the studied language.
