Sports Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) is an experimental science course combining academic study with practical investigative skills. SEHS explores the science underpinning physical performance. The course incorporates the disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition. The course offers a deeper understanding of the issues related to sports, exercise and health in the 21st century.
SEHS is good preparation for courses in higher and further education related to sports fitness and health, and serves as useful preparation for employment in sports and leisure industries.
Core topics (SL): Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Energy Systems, Movement Analysis,Skills in Sport and Measure and Evaluation of human performance.
Additional topics (HL): Further anatomy, The endocrine system, Fatigue, Skill acquisition, Friction and drag, Genetics and athletic performance and Exercise and immunity
Paper 1 – 45 mins SL / 60 mins HL. Multiple Choice (20%)
Paper 2 – 75 mins SL / 135 mins HL. Data based and short answer questions as well as extended questions (one for SL and two for HL) (35%)
Paper 3 – 60 mins SL / 75 mins HL. Short answer questions SL/short answer and extended answer HL (25%)
Internal Assessment – 10 hours. Individual investigation (20%)
