For the boarding community, Scarborough College is not just our school, it is our home and we are very proud of it.

Our most recent OfSTED boarding inspection report showed this clearly.  Here are just some of the extracts from the report that show how the boarders feel about Scarborough College:

Boarders said ‘it’s like a family being at this school’

Boarders comments included ‘I felt very unsettled when I first came to the school but the boarders and house staff made me feel very comfortable and they were easy to talk to’.

‘This is a happy school.’

There are approximately ninety boarders at the College who live in three houses situated a short walk from the main College site. Living away from the main site helps to give the houses that sense of being a home rather than an extension of the College and the houses have all the latest facilities and very comfortable accommodation.

Each house has a dedicated team of staff who work to help the boarders make the very best of their time at the College and put their needs first.  We are also at the start of a very exciting boarding house refurbishment and expansion program which will take the next few years to complete, with the first phase due to be completed at anytime.

We have a busy programme of events for the boarders to enjoy in the evenings and at weekends, and are always happy to try and accommodate requests from the students. Most weekends the boarders have the opportunity to go out and try new experiences such as go-karting, surfing, paintballing and ice skating.  Inter house activities and Themed evenings, usually organised and planned by our International students themselves, have proved very popular in recent years, including the German Night, Italian Night, Burns Night, Yorkshire Night and the Christmas Safari Supper and Party, just to name a few.

Scarborough is set in beautiful surroundings and the houses are located in the quiet residential area of the south cliff. The town centre is within walking distance and has good shopping facilities which boarders can enjoy at weekends. Weekend trips also include cultural trips and the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the local area.

For students travelling from further afield, Scarborough has excellent rail links with York, Hull and London. There is a direct train service from Manchester Airport and we are happy to make all the necessary travel arrangements to collect and send boarders to Manchester and Leeds Bradford Airports at the beginning and end of each half term.

If you would like to know anything more about boarding at Scarborough College, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us or to arrange a visit to come and look around.  This is indeed ‘a happy school’ and we would love you to be a part of it.

Boarding Activities

Activities are put on most weekends where boarders can get out and about doing something different with their friends for a whole or half day.  Throughout the week, the houses are equipped with pool tables, table tennis tables, TVs, pianos, kitchens and many areas to relax.  There is a gym, with free membership, just a short walk away and students also have the use of the College’s sports hall and indoor swimming pool at allocated times during evenings and weekends. Weather permitting, Scarborough offers the best of all worlds, with wonderful opportunities to get out into the town, countryside or seaside.

Study time can be spent either in the quiet computer room or in the private study spaces in bedrooms.  The choice is theirs as to how busy or quiet they prefer to be, but there is always someone to talk to and something to do.

As well as making sure all our boarders work hard and keep up to date with their studies and school commitments, we are very keen to ensure they have plenty of fun and are entertained outside of the school and the classrooms.  There is a busy programme of events planned each term and all of our students are expected to sign up for at least two activities.  These include shopping and sightseeing trips to York, Leeds and London. Days out mountain biking in Dalby Forest, Go Karting, 10 Pin Bowling, cinema trips, ice skating, adventure days at theme parks including Alton Towers and Flamingo Land plus more cultural visits to Castle Howard house and garden. There is certainly something for everyone, plus the chance to just ‘chill out’ and unwind or join in one of the many House Parties, Theme Nights or BBQ’s.
