Senior School Sport
Sport is a crucial element of the educational experience we offer at Scarborough College. The variety, depth and quality of our provision are essential components in generating an atmosphere in which boys and girls can both develop and enjoy their sport, while also creating an awareness of the relationship between constructive exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Students of all ability are encouraged to play meaningful and competitive sport, at House, School or representative level.
The main sports for boys are rugby, hockey and cricket and for girls hockey, netball and tennis. We have achieved considerable success in a wide range of sports, and have an impressive list of pupils who have represented the county, region or National sides. Hockey, in particular, is very strong at Scarborough College and we are one of the top hockey schools in the North of England.
However, we are as proud of the depth of our provision as we are of the high quality of our top sports players, and we aim to cater for the less able as we do for the A team player. We recognise that different students have different strengths and interests, and we try to offer as wide a choice of sports as possible in the hope that each person will find something to enthuse them. We recognise and welcome competition within sport. Competition encourages team awareness and, when guided appropriately, teaches the importance of winning without arrogance and losing with good grace.
Most sports offer competitive fixtures at both School and House level, and much emphasis is placed on the way students conduct themselves on and off the pitch. It is important that all those who run sport at Scarborough College and all students who play it are aware of the need for the highest standards of sportsmanship at all levels.
All students who opt to play a particular sport have access to excellent facilities and the opportunity to benefit from coaching. Every team group has its own dedicated coach and the opportunity to participate in competitive sport, whatever their ability. We are privileged with outstanding sporting facilities, with an all weather surface for hockey and tennis, numerous rugby pitches and cricket wickets used by Scarborough Cricket club. At our Bramcote Sports Complex we benefit from an excellent sports hall, further games fields and a swimming pool.
In addition to the main team sports, students also get a chance to experience other activities including golf, swimming etc and in Year 11 and the Sixth Form can extend these individual interests as well as the opportunity to attend a local gym.
The extra curricular programme offers further opportunities for students to both train for school teams and diversify their talents in other areas including football, badminton and dance. The range on offer varies over time according to the seasons and the interests of the staff and pupils.
