An Independent Day and Boarding School for Boys and Girls aged 3 to 18 years

Portugal hockey tour October half term

The girls and boys 1st XI hockey teams travelled to Lisbon on Saturday 19 October. The weather forecast was not quite as hoped, but we did manage to dodge the showers, most of the time!  Our first matches were a great introduction to Portuguese hockey.  A local club team, who had a selection of players with about 4 years experience, but of varying ages.  Both our teams played exceptionally well, the girls winning 6-0 and the boys 7-0.  It was good to see their enthusiasm and commitment to the team and this boded well for the next match, which we were advised would be the toughest.

Again, both teams played exceptionally well against some extremely talented and well drilled opposition.  The girls narrowly lost 2-1, (though they put up an extremely good come back in the second half) and the boys drew 1-1 in a match that showed real courage and determination.  James Houghton had a phenomenal game in goal and certainly deserved the accolade of ‘Man of the Match’.

Our last matches were influenced by the weather, to say the least.  The girls did at least manage to play their match, wining 6-0, though they had to abandon it briefly due the torrential rain.  However, there was no possibility of the boys match going ahead as the heavens opened before they even got on the pitch, which then flooded, (as did the whole surrounding area).

Big thanks need to go out to James Houghton, Chris North and Joe Barker who played for girls and to Alice Kirkup and Mr Wilson who played for the boys throughout the tour.

Alongside the hockey, we did manage to spend some time on the beach as well as tour Lisbon, and indulge in the most amazing custard tarts from Belem plus visit Caiscais to the north, and indulge in the most amazing ice cream!
