The Senior School embraces and fosters academic excellence in an atmosphere of involvement, diversity and care. Within the Senior School we continue to open the doors to exciting, challenging and adventurous opportunities so that our pupils can thrive and develop.
From our Yorkshire Grit programme to our demanding science curriculum, Scarborough College has plenty of offer. We welcome pupils with a wide range of talents, skills sets and interests. We are well-known for our diverse curriculum and we are rightfully proud of it.
In Year 7 we start to welcome both day and boarding pupils to our school. Our boarding school community includes children from the UK and the rest of the world. Together, they bring a wealth of cultural approaches to learning and living. Within this international environment, our pupils can start to embrace the idea that the world around them is only as big and as daunting as they want it to be. So if they wish to explore the world, it is right on the Scarborough doorstep.
If you are thinking about joining a thriving, traditional but also outward-facing independent school, our doors are open. Visit us or book a taster day and find out what it is like being a pupil at Scarborough College. We look forward to welcoming you to Scarborough College.
Guy Emmett, Headmaster
The Senior School is a world of opportunities and challenges that pupils can grab and explore. While Years 10 and 11 prepare pupils for Sixth Form, the lower years are awash with possibilities to develop the academic mind, the adventurous spirit and the competitive nature.
Within many abundantly resourced and state-of-the-art classrooms, we ensure that whatever a pupil’s choice of subjects, they can thrive in their pursuit of academic rigour. Sports are an instrumental part of each day and many pupils will receive their invitation to represent the school in one or more of its main sports.

Yorkshire Grit is an integral part of the early Senior School curriculum and though it is largely an enrichment programme and, as such, optional, it is incredibly popular. Working on diverse and perhaps less well-known projects such as surfing, mindfulness and raft-building; Yorkshire Grit exposes our Year 7s, 8s and 9s to finding skills and attitudes they never knew they possessed.
The early years offer fantastic opportunities to get involved in other aspects of school life. Small musical performances are organised throughout the year and the whole school production has been a school and local favourite for many years. Pupils may find they can break into the school’s representative teams and there are many projects and trips that take them beyond the classroom and beyond the school grounds.
Pupils in Years 10 and 11 have six mandatory subjects, which are English, Maths and a modern foreign language, as well as the sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils can choose to add subjects from a diverse range of options. These subjects include Geography, History, ICT, Business Studies, Art, Drama, Philosophy and Ethics, Music, Design & Technology and more. You can find information on subject choices on our GCSE subjects page.
Scarborough College has consistently delivered outstanding GCSE results and has often excelled in achieving high rates of value added, both per pupil as well as per subject. For more information on GCSE results, please click on the link.
During Years 10 and 11, we will assess pupils’ desire and suitability to continue to Year 12 and the International Baccalaureate programme. The IB preparation programme is designed specifically to guide pupils and to ensure that they are familiar with the demands of the IB diploma programme.
