Welcome to a school that celebrates excellence, rewards endeavour, encourages development, aids progress and offers care, compassion and friendship. I believe that children learn most effectively in an environment that is relaxed, friendly and supportive. We uphold a rigorous approach, with an eye to the pursuit of excellence – we have specialist teachers, high standards and high expectations. We maintain small classes to enhance the pursuit of knowledge and provide an accelerated learning programme.
In our traditional approach we also embrace ‘the modern world’. All the children from Little Owls to Year 6 learn to use technology, whether it is on an interactive whiteboard, a desktop/laptop computer or a tablet. Years 5 and 6 are issued with a school Chromebook, and when required submit work electronically. We foster a holistic approach, treating every child as a creative individual. This ensures we have ample opportunity for the children to express themselves through art, drama and music. Every child in class has specialist art and music lessons, which will hopefully develop into individual music and LAMDA lessons.
Sport and physical fitness are very important and our children do Games every day, including traditional competitive sports as well as other, more individual activities. From Year 3 onwards, each child has the chance to play in competitive matches against other schools. I hope you will enjoy the photos of the children in their annual cycle of activities, sports, classwork, music, drama, enjoying their natural, spectacular environment – but more importantly come and visit us, see for yourselves the wonderful education we have to offer. Witness the warmth, courtesy and exciting education of the Prep School at Scarborough College.
Chris Barker, Head of the Prep School
The Prep School educates children aged 3 to 11. From Reception to Year 2, children are class-based with one teacher specifically trained for that age group. Pupils have the majority of their lessons with their teacher in the mornings and a small number of subject specialists teach them art, French, music, ICT and games. Starting in Year 3, all subjects are taught by subject specialists. For more information about our PHSE, click here to view our progression map.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 learn in an environment where they have room to develop freely, focusing on their differing strengths. Core curriculum subjects are taught by their main teacher in small classes. Specialist subjects such as French, music and ICT are taught by subject specialists and start in the Reception.
The Infants participate in a diverse range of games and activities, including athletics and gymnastics, making use of the Bramcote sports complex, the local swimming pool and Deepdale playing fields. The children regularly participate in field trips, museum and theatre visits and after-school activities such as recorder club, football and fine arts.
Pupils in Years 3 to 6 are taught by subject specialist teachers throughout, providing an efficient and supportive entry to Senior School. This ethos is highlighted by the number of Senior School teachers that teach in the Prep School and the pupils’ access to Senior School facilities such as the arts department, D&T, the music school and the science labs.
Prep School pupils benefit from diverse academic and cultural programmes that include teaching and learning outside the classroom, supporting the pupils’ social development, their sense of adventure and their love of learning.
Sport is an integral element of Scarborough College life throughout and the Prep School. Pupils start playing and representing their academic houses in Year 3. They may also begin to think about representing Scarborough College in the main sports, as we take on our local rivals.
Private music tuition is available to all Prep School pupils and the we are proud to host regular break-time performances as well as larger productions, which are in combination with the Drama department. The London Academy of Music and Art provide individual and group lessons. Pupils can take both ABRSM exams as well as LAMDA exams at Scarborough College.
