IB Results 2024: Destination Ivy League

In our ongoing series of conversations with 2024 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) leavers, we had the pleasure of speaking with Ema, a remarkable student who has secured a place at Ivy League college – Columbia University – to study Biochemistry. Here, she shares her inspiring story, insights into the US application process, and her advice for future IB students.

The Journey to Columbia

The path to Columbia University was long but very rewarding. As someone who enjoys various academic pursuits and is generally curious about many things, picking the right course and university was challenging. Coming from a small country like Macedonia, I have always been enamoured with the animated and busy streets of New York City. Like every ambitious student, the Ivy League Universities seemed like a dream that became more tangible the harder I worked.

My application to Columbia University was quite last minute, if I am being completely honest. My strenuous schedule nearing my final exams was ironically the best possible thing that could have happened. I had little time to second-guess and think about how I sounded on paper, so my true voice came out in my application, which ultimately led to my likely candidate letter and acceptance. I chose to apply for Biochemistry because it is a field of science I incredibly enjoy learning about. This passion became truly apparent to me while conducting research for my Biology Extended Essay, which allowed me to imagine pursuing this degree.

Anticipations and Aspirations

I am most looking forward to fully immersing myself in my chosen area of study and uncovering more about the areas of biochemistry that truly interest me. In conjunction with this, Columbia’s Core Curriculum will also continue to expand my horizons with knowledge on literature, music, history, and many other subjects that will bond me and my fellow peers.

I am excited to explore my scientific interests, too. Columbia University was exceedingly generous to name me one of a few research fellows in my year group, enabling me to conduct research projects of my choosing, which will be presented at a science symposium among fellow like-minded individuals.

Words of Wisdom for Future IB Students

My advice to anyone considering taking the IB is simple: do it. Don’t be afraid of the big challenges and scary words, of the subject material or the sheer vastness of it. Grasp at the amazing experience. Grasp at every opportunity which will be thrown at you. Manage your time, make friends, and keep them close. They will be your support throughout the hurdles.

Lastly, have fun. Pick the subjects that interest you the most and enjoy them. Learn about the things that spark your imagination and never stop thinking outside of the box. As the IB always teaches us, be a risk-taker!

Ema is one of three students who are bound for the United States this year – Juliette is heading to Harvard and Johanna to South Carolina – and one of a growing number of our students heading to Ivy League colleges. We are incredibly proud of you all, and wish you the very best on the next step in your educational journey.
