Headmaster’s Update: 2 May 2025

The Summer Term has greeted us with glorious sunshine and a raft of opportunities for our pupils from the music recital to surfing, we have begun this busy term with a bang! Our youngest learners in the prep school have ventured to a local farm for a day learning about lambing and nature walks. Scarborough offers a truly wonderful natural environment for our pupils to enjoy and learn from.

It is remarkable how quickly this academic year has progressed. Our IBDP students started their formal examinations this week, and our Year 11 students begin their study leave at the end of next week. We wish them all the best of luck in the weeks ahead and I look forward to IB and GCSE results day.

This term marks a significant moment in school life: the appointment of our new student leadership team. I am delighted to congratulate Anouk on her appointment as Head of School, alongside her deputies Jess, Malachi and Martha. A full list of our new leadership team is now available on the website. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and are confident they will lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and purpose.

Madame Barnes’s French food tasting day gave our prep school pupils the chance to try something very different – escargot and frog legs featured on the menu, alongside more familiar croissants and baguettes with cheese. Even our reception children were tempted to try something new. I can certainly see the nerves amongst our examination classes but perhaps the most nervous I have seen this week is Mr Barker who tried snails!

A particular highlight this term has been the official opening of our new boarding house, Lodge. We were pleased to welcome more than 30 students into this fantastic new home and equally delighted to show visiting parents and members of the Old Scardeburgians Association around the building this morning. My sincere thanks to our Estate team and Business Manager, Miss Higgins, for delivering such a high standard of finish. It’s a real home-from-home for our boarders and it has certainly tempted some day pupils to become weekly borders.

Looking ahead to next year, I would like to share a few key staff changes:

 – Mr Matthew Porter, our incoming Senior Deputy Head, will be visiting the UK this term and spending time at the College ahead of his full start. We look forward to introducing him formally to parents soon.

 – Mr Sam Thurgood will take on the vital new role of Deputy Head Pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead. As a result, he will be stepping down as Head of Rugby.

 – In the Sixth Form, we say a fond farewell to Miss Heather Ramsay, who has been a valued part of the College for many years. Ms Katie Cooke will be stepping into the role of Head of Sixth Form alongside her existing responsibilities, supported by Miss Emma Speake. Mr Thurgood will also be based in the Sixth Form Centre.

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to Mr Wayne Adams, who recently celebrated 25 years of service at Scarborough College. Wayne always shows great commitment to the College – a good example of this dedication is that he spent the first weekend of this term on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition before heading straight back to coach on the cricket field and in the Maths classrooms, where he consistently achieves outstanding GCSE results. Thank you, Wayne, for everything you do – and thank you also to all our long-serving staff whose passion and dedication underpin all that we achieve as a school.

There is much to look forward to as we move through this final term of the academic year. I thank you for your continued support and look forward to sharing more successes and celebrations in the weeks to come.

Warm regards,

Mr Guy Emmett, Headmaster
