Headmaster’s Update 14 March 2025

Headmasters Welcome 140325

As we approach the end of term, life at College has been more dynamic than ever, with a wealth of academic, artistic, and sporting achievements to celebrate.

Our now annual student-led TEDx event took place on 7 March, centred around the thought-provoking theme of Identity Crisis. The event showcased an array of outstanding talks delivered by both students and staff. I extend my congratulations to the organising committee, led by Year 13 students Sophia and Toby, and supported by Ms Cooke. We eagerly anticipate next year’s instalment.

This week, students from Reception to Year 13 have embraced British Science Week, engaging in a range of hands-on scientific activities – from explosive cans to rat dissections. The enthusiasm and participation have been impressive, thanks in large part to the dedication of our student-led STEM committee. I thank Mrs Harvey and the entire science department for their organisation and support.

In Performing Arts, we have been delighted to welcome the LAMDA external adjudicators, who are assessing the talents of our drama students over two days. Under the expert guidance of Mrs Pears and Ms Galway, our students have been focused and well prepared, and we look forward to another year of outstanding results. Meanwhile, our Year 11 Drama students have recently completed their GCSE Drama Practicals, producing work of an exceptional standard. Their hard work will undoubtedly serve them well as they enter the rest of the exam season.

Our musicians achieved almost unbelievable success at the Eskdale Festival of the Arts, with an impressive 29 first-place awards. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication of Mr Richardson, Mr Garfitt, and Mrs Leason, whose commitment continues to nurture musical talents within our school community.

On the sports field, our teams have delivered outstanding performances across netball, rugby, hockey and in individual areas such as equestrian and squash. A particular highlight has been the U13 Rugby 7s team, who triumphed in the Terrington 7s, defeating teams from across the UK, including Merchiston Castle School and Sedbergh. Their success, along with excellent showings from our U18 and U15 Rugby 7s squads, provides a strong foundation as we prepare for the upcoming Rosslyn Park International 7s Tournament later this month.

Our Boys’ 1st XI Hockey team has demonstrated true skill and determination, securing victories over Sedbergh and RGS Newcastle in the IHSC competition to reach the quarter-finals. The U16s have also reached Tier 1 national quarter final, having defeated The Perse School 4-2!

Finally, on a personal note, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to Ms Katy O’Connor, who has recently joined us as my new PA. As a parent within our school community, Katy already has a deep understanding of College life, and we are delighted to have her as part of our administrative team.
